Sampurna Vikramorvashiyam | Kalidas | Marathi Translation by Alaknanda Inamdar

A king rescues a celestial dancer from a demon, and heaven and earth are never quite apart again. Sampurna Vikramorvashiyam ("Urvashi won by valour") is Kalidas's five-act play about King Pururava and the apsara Urvashi, translated into Marathi by Alaknanda Inamdar, with the original Sanskrit verses alongside the Marathi.

The play opens with Pururava saving Urvashi and her friend Chitralekha from the demon Keshi. Urvashi's love letter on a birch leaf falls into the queen's hands. A curse sends Urvashi back to heaven, and Pururava wanders the forest searching for her. The story is one of the oldest in India: it first appears as a dialogue in the Rigveda (Mandala 10, Sukta 95) and later in the Shatapatha Brahmana. In both of those, the lovers part forever. Kalidas changed the ending and brought them back together.

This is the second of Kalidas's three plays. The others, Abhijnan Shakuntalam and Malavikagnimitram, are also available from Varada. With the Sanskrit and Marathi side by side, it suits students of Sanskrit, readers of mythology, and anyone who enjoys Kalidas.
