Sangit Shakuntal | Annasaheb Kirloskar | Kalidas Shakuntal Marathi Sangeet Natak

In 1880, a Pune audience heard Kalidas's Shakuntala sing in Marathi for the first time. Sangit Shakuntal is Annasaheb Kirloskar's musical adaptation of Abhijnan Shakuntalam. It became one of the founding classics of Marathi Sangeet Natak and is still performed today.

The play retells the love of Shakuntala and King Dushyanta through 198 songs, many with lyrics and music by the young Govind Ballal Deval, who went on to write Sangit Sharada. Kirloskar first staged half of the play in 1880 and the complete version the following year. Along with Saubhadra, it has been performed again and again for well over a century. It suits lovers of natya sangeet, students of Marathi theatre history, and readers of Kalidas.

Annasaheb Kirloskar (1843–1885) had little formal schooling but knew Sanskrit literature deeply.
