Book Summary

Raghuvansh opens with a childless king following a cow through the forest, ready to give his own life to a lion in her place. Nineteen cantos later it ends with a king who rules by dangling his foot out of a palace window. Between those two scenes, Kalidas tells the story of the solar dynasty of Ayodhya: Dilip, Raghu, Aja, Dasharath, Ram, and the kings who came after Ram. This Varada edition gives Marathi readers the whole poem in three volumes, translated and edited by Ramchandra Ganesh Borvankar.

The poem has three parts. Cantos 1 to 9 are about Ram's ancestors: Dilip serving Nandini, Raghu's conquests and his gift to the student Kautsa, Indumati's swayamvar, Aja's grief after her sudden death, and the hunting accident that leaves Dasharath cursed. Cantos 10 to 15 retell the Ramayan in Kalidas's own shorter way, including the flight home from Lanka in the Pushpak. Cantos 16 to 19 follow Kush back to an empty Ayodhya and trace the line down to Agnivarna, whose neglect of his kingdom closes the epic.

Raghuvansh is one of Kalidas's two mahakavyas; the other is Kumarsambhav, also published by Varada. Its roughly 1,564 verses use 21 Sanskrit metres, and for centuries students learned Sanskrit poetry from it, usually with Mallinath's Sanjivani commentary beside them. If you know Ram's story only from Valmiki or Tulsidas, this book shows you the generations before and after him.
