Meghdut (Cloud Messenger)
(Incl. of all taxes)
Book Summary
Most people know Dr. C. D. Deshmukh as the first Indian Governor of the Reserve Bank and as India's Finance Minister in the Nehru years. Fewer know that he was also a Sanskrit scholar who loved Kalidas, and that he translated Kalidas's Meghdut (Meghdoot, Meghaduta) into Marathi himself. This is that translation.
The poem tells one simple story. A Yaksha, cursed by his master Kubera to spend a year away from his wife, sits on the hill of Ramagiri at the start of the monsoon. He sees a dark cloud resting on the peak and asks it to carry his message to her in Alaka, far up in the Himalayas. In the first half, Purvamegha, he plans the cloud's journey north over the Vindhyas and the Narmada, past Vidisha, with a detour to Ujjayini, and on to Kailas, describing the land below as it goes. In the second half, Uttaramegha, the cloud reaches Alaka, and the Yaksha tells it what his home looks like, how his wife will be waiting, and exactly what to say to her. The whole poem is written in the slow, rolling Mandakranta metre, and it started the tradition of messenger poems that Indian poets imitated for centuries.
Deshmukh was born in 1896 in Nategaon, near Fort Raigad, and as a schoolboy he won the first Jagannath Shankarseth Scholarship in Sanskrit. He went on to the Indian Civil Service, the RBI, the Finance Ministry and the University Grants Commission, but he never stopped writing verse in Sanskrit and Marathi. This Meghdut is the work of a man who read Kalidas closely all his life, not as a job.
Varada Prakashan also publishes a separate Marathi translation of Meghdut by Ramchandra Ganesh Borvankar. The two are different books by different translators, and reading both shows how differently the same verses can be carried into Marathi. See Borvankar's Meghdut.
